In a world with profile pictures, “about me” sections and daily photos of what we’re up to… it’s easy to only show people what we want them to see. We’ve all heard, “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” but that’s constantly what we do with people. Whether it’s from a quick encounter in person or adventurous Instagram photos or a captivating Facebook status, we are only seeing what people choose to show us and we form our opinion based on that. There are some who try to convince themselves that they are better than others based off of what they see. But there are also those who tear themselves down and battle with insecurities based off of what they see. And that’s the problem. We are only seeing what people WANT us to see. We are only seeing the surface, we are only seeing who they are when they’re at their best. But with ourselves, we see the worst of it. We see the days that we almost gave up, we see the moments that we felt unloved and unworthy, we see the regret of words we should have never said and the memories of feeling defeated. We see it all in our own lives, but in the lives of others, we only see the good parts, the beautiful parts. That’s probably not going to change anytime soon, we will most likely spend the rest of our lives only seeing the best of others, the parts they choose to show us. But at least we can live with the knowledge that that’s only their highlight reel. So maybe next time we see something that makes us feel like our life isn’t good enough… we can make those insecurities disappear by thinking about all of OUR best parts and remembering that everyone is imperfect, even if they don’t let us see that side of them.
I'd love to hear from you!
